I never asked but I heard you cast your lot along with the poor. But then I overheard your prayer, that you be this and nothing more than just some grateful faithful woman's favourite singing millionaire, the patron Saint of envy and the grocer of despair, working for the Yankee Dollar.

upset

i wasn't going to write this so soon but i'm leaving tonight and won't be back till tuesday so here goes. i am extremely upset by these terrorist attacks and since this is self explanatory let me share something with you on the periphery of these attrocities. this concerns the crap that i've been hearing all day on greek radio and tv today, such as stupid pseudo analysis eg "the terrorists had attacks planned on all candidate cities for the olympics and then chose the winner" (i can live with stupidity). my friend, if these fuckers could strike london, paris and ny on the same day, they ....hm... probably would.

what i can't tolerate is, comments such as "well they busted our balls about security in the olympics and they can't even guard their own country". This really makes me mad. Why not just come out and say we're happy about what happened, just as we were happy with 9/11. More baby killers dead, just say it. They got egg on their face and this makes us feel superior. Why cover it up? (by "we" i'm talking about a minority or maybe sadly a majority of greeks). I just finished watching a story with literally a yesterday/today split screen of Blair that shows the contrast in his feelings. What's the purpose of this if not to secretly (?) gloat? What's the journalistic value of this?

I'm happy i'm leaving the country early tomorrow, maybe i'll miss the first page of the communist party's newspaper. On September 12th 2001 that first page read "Strike in the heart of imperialism". The members of the party were commenting publicly that "well we're not happy about what happened but we're not sad either" ie "we're happy". Sadly, these are not the views of a minority of lunatics (present in every country). It's hard for non greeks to understand this but somehow these are have become mainstream views here. If any greeks are reading this (doubtful) i hope you're not upset. Better to be honest about our sad and disturbing state of mind. And please, i don't like mr bush or the war in iraq either so don't give me that crap. again.

lou, i hardly consider the gloating over deaths of innocents any sort of redemption (?!) or reason to feel proud. i wish there were better things to gloat about for the majority here.
